Copper

Like both zinc and magnesium, copper is an essential trace element. The human body requires copper in order to absorb and utilize iron. Copper is also very important because it need to make adenosine triphosphate (ATP), our body’s energy, and superoxide dismutase (SOD), a powerful antioxidant enzyme. Copper supplementation has been shown to increase level of SOD in the human body.

While copper deficiency is not common many individual consumer less than an adequate amount, 1 to 5 mg per day. Some medical professionals suggest supplementing the average diet with 1 to 3 mg of copper daily. However, the need for individuals who have a balanced diet to supplement with copper has not been substantiated by clinical studies. Many people who supplement with zinc should also consider taking a mild copper supplement.
