Zinc is an essential mineral that required to carry out a large variety of metabolic processes in the body. It is a component part of over three hundred enzymes which are used to maintain healthy cell reproduction, adolescent growth, adult fertility, synthesize protein, enhance immunity and protect the body against harmful free radicals.
While zinc deficiencies are common in third world countries that are not as common in developed countries. However, even in developed countries, low-income pregnant women and pregnant teenagers may experience a degree of zinc deficiency. Experts suggest that women in these group benefit from supplementing with 25 to 30 mg per day.
Individual who want to prevent zinc deficiency may want to consider moderate supplementation by taking approximately 15 mg of zinc a day. Some individuals with certain health conditions may want to supplement with substantially higher doses but should do so only under the supervision of a doctor.
